The work of University of West London (UWL) School of Film Media and Design (LSFMD) final year BA (Hons) Photography student Irina Limar, titled ‘Futuristic Towers at Dusk’, capturing images of the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf, is on display at Brentford Library. It’s featuring as part of the Creative People & Places Hounslow Creative Arts Programme, which organises exhibitions by local creatives in public spaces across the borough including cafes and libraries.
‘Futuristic Towers at Dusk’ is on show from 8 February until 9 April 2024, when it will move to another venue included in the scheme.
Originally from Moldova, Irina is the second UWL photography student to have a solo exhibition with Creative People & Places. She has been focusing on urban landscapes in recent years, as Photography Course Leader Peter Bennett explains: “Irina has been working hard and created some exciting images. The photographs in the exhibition were taken at night in the mist. It forms an extraordinary and highly atmospheric vision of London.”
Irina was inspired to study photography when her daughter started studying music at London College of Music (LCM), part of UWL.
“Getting the opportunity of a solo show has been an amazing experience for me,” she says. “It was great to have a chance to print and install my images – it is very different to seeing them on a monitor or digitally.”
She recalls being surprised by seeing the modern tower-like buildings of Canary Wharf with their bright lighting, at night, through the mist and fog.
“I took something like 1,000 pictures and those chosen for this exhibition are the ones which have a look that connects them to the Sci-Fi movies I enjoy watching, like Blade Runner or the Fifth Element,” Irina adds.
