London played host to over a thousand walkers on Saturday as the popular Ultra Challenge series came to the capital, with participants walking up to 42k and taking in the city’s most remarkable sights.
The London Summer Walk welcomed 1,200 walkers to its base camp in Woolwich. There were three routes being undertaken, all heading straight to Woolwich Tunnel, before diverging depending on the distance being taken on.
The flagship 42k marathon loop set off first going up to the Olympic Park and then returning via the Tower of London and Canary Wharf. The 25k loop saw walkers head past Cutty Sark, Old Naval College and Greenwich Peninsula, with the shorter 10k loop offering a family-friendly event that finished at the same point as the other two.
Julian Risley, Founder and Managing Director at Ultra Challenge, said: “The London Summer Walk was brilliant once again. We are always completely in awe of the passion and determination of all the people who undertake our events. Massive congratulations to everyone who crossed that finish line today.
“London’s iconic scenery provides a unique backdrop to our events. Many of our events take place out in the country, taking in coastlines and hillsides. While they are stunning in their own right, these capital events offer a really unique experience packed with history and landmarks. We can’t wait to be back in a few weeks for our trio of events in September.”
Finishers were provided with food and drink throughout at industry-leading rest stops, as well as medic support and a free massage after the finish line, in addition to a medal for completing the Ultra Challenge.
The next Ultra Challenge event to take place in London is actually three events in one. Happening across 11-13 September, the Thames Path Challenge, Thames Moonlight 10 and Thames Bridges Trek will once again see thousands traversing the streets, with spaces still available for these.
