A ruined laminating pouch can usually tell you what went wrong.

Most jams begin at the entry slot
A laminating pouch has one sealed edge and three open sides. The sealed edge should enter first so both layers reach the rollers together.
Feed an open edge first and the layers can separate. One side may reach the rollers ahead of the other, causing the pouch to wrinkle, fold or wrap around an internal roller. With an office A3 laminator, a slight error has more room to develop across the wider sheet.
The rollers will not straighten a diagonal feed. Position the pouch centrally, hold the sealed edge level and release it once the machine takes hold. Pushing can disturb the alignment, while pulling from the exit side may stretch the heated plastic.
A crushed corner or firm crease often becomes more obvious once the surface turns glossy.
Cloudiness usually means the pouch was not hot enough
A cloudy result appears when the adhesive has softened but has not bonded evenly to the paper.
Check the warm-up period first. Laminating machines may sound ready before their rollers have reached the temperature needed for a clean seal. Use the ready light, display or audible signal. A machine kept in a cold storeroom may take longer than expected.

Large A3 sheets stay warm as they leave the rollers. Support the document without pulling it, then place it flat to cool.
Bubbles are not always trapped air. Fresh ink and damp paper can retain moisture which, once sealed between heated plastic layers, has nowhere easy to escape. Reports and pages with heavy colour coverage need time to dry.
Glue, labels and layered paper can also interrupt roller pressure. Several smaller items can be laminated together if they are fixed to a flat backing sheet and remain within the supported thickness. Test unusual materials with a copy rather than an irreplaceable original.
Micron pouches must suit the document and machine
Laminating pouch thickness is measured in microns. A higher rating normally creates a firmer result, while a lower rating leaves the document more flexible.
The figure on the packaging does not mean the pouch will work with every laminator. A compact office machine may struggle to heat a thick pouch evenly or pull it through consistently, leading to clouding, a weak seal or a jam.
A pouch described as 125 microns commonly has a 125-micron layer on each side. That gives 250 microns of plastic before the paper or card is included.
Before starting the lamination process, check:
- The supported pouch thickness
- The recommended setting
- Whether the pouch is for hot or cold lamination
- The combined thickness of everything inside it
The thickest pouch is not automatically the most useful. Office literature stored in a folder may need flexibility, while a menu or reference sheet handled throughout the day may benefit from a firmer finish.

The clear border is part of the seal
The transparent margin around a laminated document is not wasted plastic. It is where the two adhesive-coated sides bond directly to one another.
If the paper sits too close to the edge, too little plastic remains to form a reliable seal. Trimming directly against the paper causes the same weakness and gives dirt or moisture a route between the layers.
Leave an even margin before laminating and retain a narrow plastic border when trimming. A document that fills the pouch needs the next suitable size.
