PUPILS at Loughborough Primary School got a hands-on lesson in eye health last week, thanks to a visit from the team at Specsavers Brixton as part of National Eye Health Week (21 – 27 September).
The locally owned and run store’s manager Donna Calendar, optician Micheala Bonsu and optical advisor Faiza Qureshi delivered an interactive session designed to help the students understand how their eyes work and why looking after their vision is so important.
Through a series of fun demonstrations and educational activities, children explored the science behind sight, learned how light helps us see and discovered simple ways to protect their eyes, including taking regular breaks from screens and attending routine eye tests.
Fred Agyarko, retail director at Specsavers Brixton, says: ‘Good vision plays a huge role in helping children learn, develop and enjoy everyday life, so it’s important they understand how to look after their eyes from an early age.
‘National Eye Health Week provided the perfect opportunity to visit the school and bring eye health to life in a fun and engaging way. The pupils were brilliant, and we hope they left feeling more confident about the importance of eye care and reduce any anxiety they might have had about visiting the opticians.’
To round off the visit, the Specsavers team presented pupils with goodie bags to help continue the conversation about eye health beyond the classroom.
Marcella Madden, Deputy Head teacher at Loughborough Primary School, said: ‘Specsavers Brixton’s visit helped our pupils learn the importance of eye health and screen safety, whilst also helping to raise awareness of how everyday habits can affect eye health. The children were very engaged and it was a memorable way to spread such an important message of looking after your eyes.’
