Boris Johnson will attempt a comeback, says his biographer Tom Bower

BORIS Johnson will definitely attempt a return to frontline politics, according to his biographer.

Tom Bower told GB News: “He’ll write memoirs and he’ll carry on trying to be as supportive of Liz Truss as he can in the short term.

“But in the end he certainly will want to lay the foundations for a return to politics.

“He’s still an MP. He is still revered by many Tories and much will depend on whether Liz Truss can capture the imagination of not only Tories but also floating voters between now and the next election.

“Boris Johnson can play a big part in supporting Liz Truss and getting victory for the Tories in 2024. Or he could do the opposite.

“If he does the opposite then his chance of returning is slight, if nil. But if he is constructive now, and if his memoirs are not destructive, I think he has a chance to get back.”

Asked about a rapid return, he told GB News: “In the short term, there’s no chance at all, as far as I can imagine.

“In his mind, he is Churchill, and he’s going into what Churchill would call his wilderness years.

“They’re very well paid because he’ll write his memoirs and…he’ll make speeches which are phenomenally well paid.

“He’ll have what he called ‘hay in the loft’ and he’ll wait for his moment, when somehow he will be summoned back because he’s the only person deemed to be able to save the Tory party.

“If Liz Truss loses in 2024, Boris will quite clearly say, ‘well, if you hadn’t got rid of me, I would have won the election’ and then it’s a matter who they take as the leader of the opposition.

He added: “Now, I don’t think Boris wants to lead the opposition but he’ll want to be a presence in the rebuilding of the Tory party if the Tories are defeated.

“He sees himself as very much the wronged individual. I think he is delusional…his demise is entirely his own fault but nevertheless he’s going to pave the way and prepare the foundations for return and I’m sure he is convinced it will happen.”

Mr Bower said: “At the moment, I’m sure he’s in complete denial. He really does believe that he has been wronged.

“But just look at those pictures of Carrie there. What a ridiculous dress to wear yesterday. She put that on, because she wanted to be noticed in the crowd.

“It is all about me, me, me, Carrie and I think that is a great burden on Boris. He hasn’t got a supportive wife, he hasn’t got a wise wife. He’s got a wife who’s in it for her own bizarre ambitions.”

Asked about their marriage, he said: “He does have a record and I’m sure Carrie is very aware of it…

“The moment he goes on his speaking tours across America, where he’ll be undoubtedly the star of the show, and be offered all sorts of temptations, Carrie will undoubtedly rightly be nervous.

“After all, she took Boris away from his long standing wife, Marina, and many think that was the beginning of his downfall.

“So Carrie of course will be very nervous about it. Whether Boris can change the spots after all these years, I doubt.

“And so I would not think that the marriage is totally secure once the hothouse of Downing Street has disappeared, but you know, that’s something which time will tell.”
