City opticians support wellbeing roadshow for construction workers

THE dangers of not looking after our sight and hearing was highlighted at a Health and Safety Wellbeing Roadshow in Broadgate.

The team at Specsavers Bishopsgate attended the high-profile event and showcased their services to employees of leading construction and civil engineering company Sir Robert McAlpine.

Rajesh Chandegra, Specsavers Bishopsgate’s optometrist director, says: ‘It was a great opportunity to discuss the wellbeing of staff first hand, many of whom are exposed to dangerous situations in their line of work.

‘We talked about eye and hearing care, including decibel ranges and explained the benefits of safety eyewear and hearcare products available in store. A number of construction employees we met didn’t realise we offered these services, so it was a good opportunity to raise awareness.

‘As a result of chatting with contractors who visited the stand, we booked in 15 total care appointments.’

The exhibition area was constructed by HSS, which built the stands for over 800 exhibitors attending the one-day event at Broadgate Campus. Speakers and exhibitors from across the construction sector promoted a diverse array of industry-leading services.

During the event the Specsavers team gave away goody bags including ear plugs, voucher offers, and leaflets detailing corporate eye care services.

The iconic development where the event was held consists of a 12-storey podium, a 21-storey West Tower and 36-storey East Tower covering a 32-acre area, making it the largest pedestrianised neighbourhood in Central London. Underpinned by a building strategy embracing sustainability and targeting net zero, the building project has been awarded a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certification.

Employees of Sir Robert McAlpine visiting Specsavers Bishopsgate can benefit from state-of-the-art equipment, including an optical coherence tomography (OCT) machine. The 3D scan is an advanced diagnostic, eye-scanning equipment that can help detect eye conditions, including glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, up to four years earlier than traditional methods. Currently this diagnostic test is on offer at an additional £5.

A dedicated audiology centre offers a soundproof booth for customers to have their hearing checked, coupled with the latest micro-suction equipment for wax removal.

Specsavers recommend that adults have an eye test at least every two years, and children should visit every year. The NHS will cover the full cost of an eye test for anyone who qualifies. All children under 16, as well as those under 19 in full-time education, are entitled to an NHS-funded eye test.
