Begin celebrating Christmas early with a series of festive activities and a giant Christmas tree light switch on at Castle Square in Zone 1’s Elephant and Castle.

Join us on Saturday 26th November from 1-6pm where you can celebrate the switching on of the Castle Square Christmas lights as well as an afternoon filled with music, carols, food, workshops and more!

It wouldn’t be Christmas without Santa, and Castle Square will be home to Santa Grotto where Londoners can visit Santa and his elf! Guests can send their Christmas lists off to the North Pole in Santa’s Post Box or tell Santa ahead of the big day why they should be on the nice list. Throughout the day Castle Square will be host to a series of Christmas workshops, which are free for locals and visitors to join. You can take part in Christmas Card making or decorate your own baubles to take home or as a gift to friends or family over the festive season.

Visitors will not want to miss the switching on of the Giant Christmas Tree and Castle Square Lights by the Mayor of Southwark who will be switching these on from 5:15pm. Castle Square will be delighted with Christmas carols sung by the Elephant and Castle Community Hub Choir and guests can choose to listen or join in as they sing their favourite carols before the Christmas tree lights are turned on.

If you can’t make the Light Switch On event don’t worry, as on Sunday 13th November, local residents and visitors alike can visit Elephant and Castle for a major classical music performance by Southwark International Music Festival The Words of the Candle at the Southwark Playhouse Theatre. The international concert violinist and local Southwark resident, Alda Dizdari, will perform and launch her most intimate album on Remembrance Sunday, that captures the reflective mood of the nation. This album, containing some of the most beautiful tunes written for the solo violin and duets with the featured artist, harpist Camilla Pay, pays tribute to the passing of a great monarch, a nation trying to heal after a traumatic pandemic and reflects on the feelings of love and hope and the spirit of revival. Attendees can purchase tickets directly from the Southwark Playhouse website.

Lastly, for Black Friday, on the 25th November all the retail traders in Castle Square will be offering up to 25% off in all stores! Following Black Friday’s discounts, in celebration of Movember, for those who will be partaking in growing their moustaches, Lonnie’s Unisex Hair and Beauty Salon will offer barber cutting at £10 instead of £15 on 30th November and 1st December, which you will not want to miss!
