Green-fingered residents could win free garden waste collections for a year

As a way to help Croydon go greener, Croydon Council and its environmental partner, Veolia, are awarding free garden waste collections and a free bag of Veolia’s climate friendly peat-free Pro-Grow compost to a lucky Croydon resident.

While hedge clippings won’t win you any gardening prizes, they do have more potential than you realise. When Croydon residents recycle their garden waste, it is taken to a facility in the South of England where it is turned into a peat-free compost that protects the environment and is ideal for giving gardens a boost at the start of the growing season.

Residents will be automatically entered into the competition if they sign up to the Garden Waste Collection Service before 23:59 on Friday 10 June. The winner will then be refunded their subscription for the year and a bag of compost will be delivered to them for free.*

Veolia’s peat-free Pro-Grow is a greener, more sustainable alternative to peat, an organic material that forms in bogs and fens. Peatlands support biodiversity, help improve UK water quality and store high quantities of carbon, which is ‘locked’ into the peat and released if the peat is extracted.

Scott Edgell, General Manager, Veolia SLWP, said: “We hope that this competition will bring to life how residents can be part of a circular economy solution – from recycling garden waste in the convenience of your home to helping to create the final product of compost, which will nourish your garden all over again.”

The Garden Waste Collection Service costs £71.02 a year, equating to £2.73 per collection. Subscribers to the Garden Waste Collection Service can use the service all year round, with collections every other week. For more information or to sign up, please visit croydon.gov.uk/gardenwaste

Croydon residents who do not subscribe to the Garden Waste Collection Service can still do the right thing by either composting their garden waste at home or taking it to their local Household Reuse and Recycling Centre. For tips on home composting, see Veolia’s simple guide at
