A former political adviser to Tony Blair has said he does not believe there will be defections by Labour MPs to the Green Party.
Speaking on GB News John McTernan said: “People had the opportunity to peel away when Jeremy Corbyn formed Your Party; these people stayed in the PLP. They’re people I don’t agree with very often on politics, but I do believe in their commitment to the Labour Party.
“I think predicting today how a seat will go in three years’ time is a fool’s errand. We’re in the world of five-party politics. Votes are fragmenting everywhere, and we have to see what happens over the next three years.
“This was a student union trick, wasn’t it? Hold a vote? I think Keir will have been happy having the last vote of this whole parliamentary session being a vote of confidence in him.
“What did Olly Robbins say and what did Morgan McSweeney say? They both confirmed that the Prime Minister was right in saying that Peter Mandelson went through the appropriate process.
“Why call an inquiry on this basis? Boris Johnson was running from his party by the time he had to leave Parliament.
“Two groups of people are in charge of who is the prime minister of the country, the voters who are going to render a verdict very shortly in May, and the Parliamentary Labour Party.
“Your parliamentary party is the ones who choose whether you’re leader or not. No one else has that ability to choose. And for the moment, Keir Starmer is in place as the leader, and that is fine.”
