Londoners plug into electric car sharing as Lewisham ranked top borough for EV rides

Londoners are increasingly choosing to travel in shared electric vehicles (EVs) with the borough of Lewisham containing the most members who are opting for an EV journey, according to new data from Zipcar, the UK’s leading car sharing network.

Zipcar members residing in south London are fully embracing the electric vehicle trend, with boroughs south of the river dominating the top five. Members in the London Borough of Wandsworth come second in the ranking of most electric vehicle flex trips, closely followed by Southwark and Lambeth. Hackney was the only north London exception, coming in fifth place.

These findings from Zipcar UK mark the first anniversary of the introduction of its fleet of 325 electric Volkswagen e-Golfs, with over one million miles travelled to date.

Indicative of the continuing trend for car sharing as opposed to ownership, the success of EV rentals in the capital comes as sales of plug-in hybrid vehicles slumped by 50.4 per cent in June after the government scrapped a £2,500 grant.
The five top-rated boroughs undertaking the most Zipcar EV Flex trips are:

London Borough
1. Lewisham
2. Wandsworth
3. Southwark
4. Lambeth
5. Hackney

Zipcar reports that 22,000 unique members have used their electric vehicles since the launch in July 2018, with Zipcar undertaking 10,000 car charges. This indicates that the new EV option is creating a surge in electric car sharing in the UK, as well as supporting the growth in car sharing overall.
