Following reports in the media that it will take the Metropolitan Police Service 100 years to build a workforce that truly reflects London’s diverse population we would like to point out that this is an assessment based on us standing still and not taking further steps to attract and retain more people of BAME heritage.
We are clear that we have absolutely no intention of standing still in this important priority and will be redoubling our efforts. Since the publication of the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry Report in 1999 representation of BAME officers in the Met has risen from 3% to 14% and going forwards we are confident that we will increase our diversity further and faster. Last year 30% of our new recruits were of BAME heritage, while for next year we aim to increase this to 35%.
