Overlooked cat Hibiscus waits for home after eight months

Could you be the purr-fect person to rehome a cat who has been overlooked time and time again?

Hibiscus has been in the care of RSPCA Friern Barnet Adoption Centre – which is based at the Pets At Home, Friern Bridge Retail Park, in Friern Barnet – for more than eight months.

It means that she is the centre’s ‘longest stay’ cat in their care. She came into the RSPCA’s care in January after being found as an underweight stray, with noticeable fur loss – which she has since thankfully made a full recovery from. She is currently in foster care.

It comes as new data unveiled during the RSPCA’s month-long Adoptober rehoming drive found that RSPCA frontline officers are dealing with an average 410* ‘multi-animal’ incidents – involving 10 or more animals – every single month – an increase on 2025 which was already a record breaking year.

Out of the 3,280 multi-animal cases reported across England and Wales already this year – 1,468 were cat cases and 757 dog multi-animal incidents.

Many of the animals rescued from these homes have behavioural and medical needs requiring rehabilitation, often supported by vet teams at inspiring vet care.

Now, this Adoptober, in partnership with inspiring vet care, the RSPCA is urgently calling upon experienced and patient pet owners to consider helping by rehoming and fostering.

The charity currently has hundreds of cats and kittens in its national centres alone – with thousands more in branches and private boarding establishments as staff struggle to find space to care for the increasing numbers.

With cats arriving faster than they can be rehomed, the RSPCA is urgently appealing for adopters and fosterers to give cats of all ages the chance of a loving home.

Rehoming Supervisor Georgina Holding said: “We are really sad that lovely Hibiscus is still waiting for her forever home.

“She is a people-friendly, sweet-natured, and curious cat who loves exploring her surroundings.

“While she has a beautiful nature and expresses affection in her own unique style, it is also important to understand that she isn’t a cat who enjoys constant physical contact.

“She truly values her independence, so any strokes or handling must always be on her terms and incredibly gentle. We are looking for patient adopters who truly appreciate her need for space and will respect her boundaries as she settles in.”

Her purr-fect home would be where she is the only cat in the household and a calm, quiet, and low-stress environment is essential.

“Her new adopters will need to be experienced cat owners who are prepared to provide the stable routine she needs to thrive,” added Georgia.

“We know there is the perfect home out there – and we hope that Adoptober is the month for her!”

Potential adopters can express an interest in Hibiscus by emailing the centre on friernbarnetadoptions@rspca.org.uk or by filling out an online application form.

inspiring vet care will be supporting the RSPCA by driving awareness of the campaign and sharing stories of animals who need homes in their 750+ practices across England and Wales, in the hope of finding more rescued animals homes. inspiring vet care is also funding veterinary care and support delivered by RSPCA frontline officers for owners in need, to help pets stay in loving safe homes.
