You may think paddlesports are a summer sport; however, Paddle UK, the national governing body for paddling and paddle sport, is encouraging the message that, with the correct safety measures, it makes a fun autumn activity.
Paddle UK has shared an easy 2.1-mile paddle along Regent’s Canal, offering a unique way to explore East London from the water this autumn.

Starting in Haggerston and finishing in Mile End, the one-way route takes between 45 and 90 minutes. Expect a lively mix of urban paddling with street art, canal boat life and plenty of waterside food spots, especially around Broadway Market. Look out for the ‘Sharks!’ Sculpture at Hoxton Docks and the Bethnal Green gas holders, before the route becomes greener alongside Victoria Park and Mile End Park. With public transport links at both ends, it’s an accessible way to enjoy a different perspective on the capital.

As temperatures drop and daylight hours shorten, Paddle UK is encouraging paddlers to plan ahead and take extra care when heading out on the water.

Paddle UK’s tips for a safe autumn paddle include:

Check conditions before setting off: Check the weather forecast, wind direction and water levels, and be prepared to change your plans if conditions are unsuitable.
Dress for the water temperature: Wear thermal base layers and suitable waterproof outer layers to help keep warm if you get splashed or capsize. Pack spare warm clothing in a dry bag.
Wear essential safety equipment: Always wear a correctly fitted buoyancy aid and carry a mobile phone in a waterproof case, kept within easy reach.
Plan around shorter days: Check sunrise and sunset times, choose a route that suits your experience and allow plenty of time to return before dark.
Tell someone your plans: Share your route and expected return time with someone on land, and let them know when you’re safely off the water.
Paddle with a qualified paddling instructor: You can find your local paddling centre here, and find a qualified instructor or group to paddle with for safety.

The Haggerston to Mile End route includes two locks that require portaging and requires a waterways licence, included with Paddle UK membership.
