Places Leisure is encouraging people across the country to take their first step towards a more active lifestyle this National Fitness Day, with free one-day passes available at its 100+ leisure centres.

Embracing this year’s “Powered by you!” theme, the social enterprise is inviting people to try its gyms, pools and fitness classes for free – whether they are new to exercise, looking to get back into a routine, or simply want to try something different.

Gyms, pools and leisure centres continue to drive physical activity levels in the UK, with a record 12.2 million people now members of a health and fitness club, according to the UK Health & Fitness Market Report 2026.

Despite the growing popularity and prioritisation of fitness among Britons, significant barriers remain. A quarter of adults in England are classed as inactive (averaging less than 30 minutes of physical activity a week). In support of National Fitness Day, to encourage people to introduce fitness into their life either for the first time or to bring physical activity back into their routine, Places Leisure is offering free one-day membership passes to all its leisure centres. It is also offering current members the opportunity to give a one-day free pass to a friend or family member.

A one-day free pass will give users access to the same benefits as Places Leisure Premium membership which includes unlimited gym use, unlimited classes, unlimited pool use, access to the Places Leisure app, and free use of SWIMTAG (wearable technology to track your swim performance and stroke).

Sam Bryant, Head of Fitness at Places Leisure, said: “Looking after our health and wellbeing has never been more important, yet many people are unsure where to begin. Places Leisure is committed to making fitness more accessible and creating more opportunities for everyone to get active in a way that works for them. Our aim is to provide welcoming, inclusive spaces where people feel supported, confident and inspired to improve their wellbeing.

“This National Fitness Day, we are encouraging people across the country to take that first step and discover activities they enjoy by making use of our free one-day passes. The passes offer access to our gyms, swimming facilities and a wide range of group exercise classes. Whether you’re new to fitness or returning after a break, our friendly teams are ready to help you feel at home and support you on your journey.”

Cameron Saunders, CEO of ukactive, said: “National Fitness Day is about showing the nation that physical activity is for everyone, regardless of age, background or experience.

“Today, more people are discovering the enjoyment, connection and rewards of being more active in their daily lives. National Fitness Day is a chance to come together to celebrate being active and also the brilliant work of our local gyms, pools, leisure centres and sports clubs.”
