Expectant visitors gathered on a traffic-free Regent Street last night to witness the switching on of the much-loved ‘Spirits of Christmas’ lights, which have been revamped for 2026 with some dazzling new additions. The street, which was closed to traffic for a switch-on event for the first time since 2019, saw the thousands of attendees treated to family-friendly entertainment and a range of in-store experiences and surprises from the destination’s shops and restaurants.
Now in their 11th year, the iconic displays comprise more than 30 sparkling ‘Spirits’, crafted from over 300,000 LED lights. This year, the Spirits are joined by new, carefully crafted additions, including five illuminated neon words – ‘Joy’, ‘Smile’, ‘Wish’, ‘Love’ and ‘Hope’ – inspired by the feelings and excitement that come with the festive season and the chance to spend time with loved ones. Star motifs and large heart gateways featuring Regent Street lettering also make their debut, alongside new decorations in Princes Arcade. Together, the additions bring an extra sense of magic and celebration to the displays while complementing the much-loved Spirit design.
Those joining the celebrations enjoyed a line-up of live entertainment along Regent Street throughout the evening, with performances from a variety of acts, including live bands, a Christmas choir and a DJ. Stilt walkers and LED dancers brought joy to the gathered crowds, while the Hamleys elves provided some festive mischief. At 6.30pm, content creator and presenter Harriet Fisher – known for her feel-good, ‘Fired on Friday, Famous by Monday’ interviews – switched on the lights, as fireworks lit up the sky above the West End, marking the moment in spectacular fashion.
The displays can be found across Regent Street and St James’s and the surrounding streets, including Jermyn Street, St James’s Market, Glasshouse Street and Quadrant Arcade. In St James’s Market, the illuminated ‘Wishing Tree’ has returned, where visitors can tap to donate £5 and trigger a twinkling light display. All proceeds will go to Felix, a charity dedicated to rescuing surplus food and redistributing it to communities in need across the UK.
Those wishing to see the lights for themselves can enjoy them daily from 3pm – midnight every day untilTuesday 5th January. Alongside the lights, there’s plenty more to discover this festive season. Regent Street recently welcomed SKIMS’ first-ever European flagship store at 245-247 Regent Street. Other new openings across the two destinations include Kith, Dubarry, DakaDaka, Antler and Monte Lys, joining over 150 world-class retailers, restaurants and seasonal events. Visitors can make a day of it with gift shopping at flagship stores, festive dining at some of the capital’s must-visit restaurants and bars, and a packed programme of theatre, culture and arts.
Karen Baines, Marketing Director at The Crown Estate, said of the event, “We welcome everyone to Regent Street and St James’s, especially over the festive period, when there is so much for visitors to experience and enjoy – from unrivalled shopping to some of the capital’s best dining, and of course to our incredible ‘Spirits of Christmas’ lights, which we’re excited to have now switched on in style.”
