Science Museum launches new interactive afternoon tea experiences

The Science Museum and Benugo are introducing two new interactive activities to be enjoyed alongside the popular Afternoon Tea experience that bring science to life at the table in a playful, hands-on way for families.

Launching on 4 June in the Gallery Café, Science Museum, and designed for children aged 6+, the new optional add-on experiences to the themed afternoon tea feature guided experiments that explore science through food, colour and reaction.

The Alien Activity Package (£24 add-on) invites children to become junior scientists as they help an alien get ready for school through a series of table-top experiments. Activities include Cake O’Clock, where children build a simple electrical circuit using cakes to power a digital clock, Milk Magic, a colourful reaction using milk, food colouring and washing-up liquid, and Alien Toothpaste, a foaming acid-base reaction using bicarbonate of soda and vinegar.

Liquid Lava Layers (£10 add-on) allows children to create their own lava-style liquid layers in a bottle using oil, water, coloured pipettes and a fizzy tablet reaction that produces carbon dioxide bubbles and a dramatic lava lamp effect. Young guests can observe how liquids separate and react in a visually striking, hands-on experiment.

Each add-on experience is clearly guided, non-edible, and designed to be safe, accessible, and fun, with simple explanations that bring the science behind each reaction to life. They are intended to be enjoyed alongside a delicious afternoon tea, specially curated by Benugo’s pastry chefs.

The Kids Science Afternoon Tea (£26) brings playful experimentation to the table, with highlights including an elemental cupcake which children decorate themselves using a syringe, test tubes filled with popping candy, sherbet and colourful toppings, alongside a rocket ship cookie and petri dish jelly. A build-your-own fizzy pink lemonade adds a hands-on chemistry moment, served with a selection of savoury bites including a Cumberland sausage roll, egg mayonnaise brioche and hummus with vegetable sticks, plus classic scones with clotted cream and jam.

The Adults Science Afternoon Tea (£36) offers a more refined take on the theme, featuring space-inspired sweet treats such as a solar system cupcake, galaxy brownie, rocket ship cookie and petri dish jelly, alongside Earl Grey tea-soaked scones with clotted cream and jam. The savoury selection includes smoked salmon with cream cheese, egg mayonnaise with mustard cress, grilled peppers with hummus and a Cumberland sausage roll, served with an unlimited selection of teas and coffee.

The optional experience add-ons are priced at £10 for Liquid Lava Layers and £24 for the Alien Activity Package. Afternoon Tea is priced at £26 per child, and £36 per adult.
