Today we’d like to tell you about Asian handicap, which is a type of handicap bets.
As of today, there are two types of Asian handicaps – simple and quarter (split).
Simple Asian Handicap
A simple handicap is a multiple of 0.5 (-1.5, -1, -0.5, 0, +0.5, +1, +1.5, etc.). To understand what is asian handicap and how it can be calculated, let’s look at one example:
There is a match between the National teams of Germany and Cameroon, where bookmakers are considered Germany as a favorite. It’s clear that it is impossible to score half of the goal, so it all comes down to that 1.5 and -1.5 in handicaps are numbers that are greater than 1.
That is, if we bet on the Germany National team with AH1 (-1.5), it would be a stake on Germany win with a difference of more than 1 goal (2:0, 3:1, 3:0, etc.)! If the match ends with a victory for Germany in one goal, a draw or any victory of Cameroon– our stake on Asian handicap -1.5 loses.
The stake on AH2 (+1.5) assumes that Cameroon won’t lose with a difference of more than one goal! That is, if the match ends in a draw, Germany wins with the score 1:0 or Cameroon win – our stake pays off. In case Germany win with a score 2:0, 3:0 and so on – we lose.
As for integer handicaps (-1, -2, 0, +1, +2, etc), here stake return is provided under certain circumstances. For instance, if you bet AH (0) on the win of the particular team, you’ll get a winning if this team wins with any score. If the match ends in a draw, your bet will be returned and calculated with @1. With any other results, the bet loses.
If you bet on AH (-1), then the chosen team (T1) has to win with a difference of two goals (2:0, 3:0, 3:1, etc.). But if the match ends with a victory for this team (T1) but only in one goal (1:0, 2:1, etc.), then your stake will be calculated as a return. And in the case of a draw or win of another team (T2) – you lose.
Quarter Asian Handicap
As you can see, simple Asian handicaps seem easy enough, but quarter-handicaps may create confusion among some beginners. So let’s discuss this kind of handicap in more details.
This handicap is called a quarter for a reason – there is a quarter (0.25) in all bets. Thus, Asian quarter handicaps include -1.25, – 0.75, -0.25, +0.25, + 0.75,
+ 1.25 and so on.
Now let’s figure out what is at first glance such a complicated bet. Asian split handicap assumes that your stake and its amount are divided into two handicaps. That is, if you decide to bet $100 on AH (+1.25), this means that you’re betting $50 on AH (+1) and the same amount on AH (+ 1.5).
The same principle quarter handicaps are divided into:
AH (-0,25) is divided into AH (0) and AH (-0,5)
AH (-0,75) is divided into AH (-0,5) and AH (-1)
AH (-1,25) is divided into AH (-1) and AH (-1,5)
AH (-1,75) is divided into AH (-1,5) and AH (-2)
AH (+0,25) is divided into AH (0) and AH (+0,5)
AH (+0,75) is divided into AH (+0,5) and AH (+1)
AH (+1,75) is divided into AH (+1,5) and AH (+2), etc.
By the way, it is worth noting that often bookmakers specify in the line already divided stake into two parts for the convenience of their users. As for calculating split handicaps, after dividing them into two separate bets they are calculated exactly the same as simple Asian handicaps.
Let’s take for example a friendly match Germany – Cameroon, where one of the bookies offers the following betting options:
Let’s say we bet $100 on AH +1, +1.5 (the same as +1.25) of Cameroon. This means that we bet $50 on AH (+1) and $50 on AH (+1.5) at @1.95. Now let’s look at possible scenarios.
- Cameroon wins or draw. In this case, both our bets win.
- Germany wins by one goal difference (0:1, 1:2, etc.). In this case, the stake AH (+1.5) wins, but the second bet AH (+1) will be returned.
- Germany wins with more than one goal difference (0:2, 0:3, 1:3, etc.). Here both of our bets lose.

Among the main advantages of Asian Handicap betting are bets flexibility and payback options.
