Britons feel their everyday efforts too often go unnoticed – and it turns out the smallest gestures make the biggest difference. New research reveals that seven in ten (70%) say a small word of encouragement can turn their whole day around, while one in five (21%) admit they don’t get enough recognition for the everyday wins they quietly achieve each week.
In fact, Brits are rethinking what success even means – and it’s less about money and more about the people in your corner. Two thirds (64%) now believe everyday moments of joy matter more than pay packets or follower counts, and having people who will always cheer you on (43%) now ranks as a greater sign of success than having savings (30%) or social media likes (38%). Three quarters (75%) say having a personal cheerleader who celebrates your wins, no matter how small, is key to a rich life.
And those little moments worth celebrating don’t stop at home – for commuters, they can start before the working day has even begun. Half of Brits (50%) say getting a friendly smile or “hello” on their journey is a moment worth a cheer, followed by getting home earlier than expected (45%), listening to music that puts them in a good mood (44%) and a kind gesture from a stranger (44%).
Others said they’d cheer bagging a seat when they thought they’d be standing (27%), seeing something funny or unexpected (29%) and tucking into a treat they’d saved all day (25%).
Acting on the findings, HARIBO surprised commuters at London Waterloo – the first stop on its new “Here for a Cheer!” tour. Travellers were met with a colourful “Cheer-Thru” pop-up, cheerleaders and little HARIBO rewards, celebrating everything from making it through the daily commute to the small efforts that so often go unrecognised.
A CAPITAL OF CHEER
Londoners, it turns out, are among the country’s biggest cheerleaders. The research found 39% of London residents regularly celebrate the achievements of friends, family and colleagues – placing the capital among the UK’s most supportive cities, alongside Newcastle (41%), Leicester (41%) and Bristol (38%).
On average, Brits enjoy eight cheerful moments a week.
Philip Murphy, Chief Marketing Officer & MD at HARIBO, said: “Success means different things to different people, but it’s clear from our research that for most Britons, having people to cheer you on and celebrate your everyday successes, no matter how small, is the key to having a rich life.
“Sometimes all it takes is a few kind words, a moment of recognition or someone celebrating a small win to brighten a person’s day. That’s why HARIBO’s ‘Here for a Cheer!’ tour is travelling across the UK this summer, turning everyday efforts into moments of recognition and rewarding them with a little lift, a little joy and a little HARIBO cheer.”
After kicking off at London Waterloo, follow HARIBO’s “Here for a Cheer!” tour as it travels across the UK this summer, rewarding everyday efforts with little HARIBO moments.
