Erica Schoebinger, a student at Drama Studio London, part of the University of West London (UWL), has been selected as one of just 12 finalists in this year’s Stephen Sondheim Society Student Performer of the Year (SSSSPOTY) Competition – a major accolade in the world of musical theatre.
Currently studying for an MFA (Masters in Fine Art) in Professional Acting, Erica will take to the stage at the gala final on Sunday 7 June at the iconic Sondheim Theatre in London’s West End.
A showcase for emerging talent
Established in 2007, the SSSSPOTY award is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious showcases for up-and-coming musical theatre performers. Each year, it attracts hundreds of applicants from drama schools across the UK, all competing for a place in the final.
Named in honour of the late Stephen Sondheim, one of the most influential composers and lyricists in musical theatre history, the competition celebrates both technical skill and artistic interpretation.
The performance of a lifetime
At the 18th annual gala, finalists will perform two songs, one by Stephen Sondheim and another new or recent piece of musical theatre writing for the stage.
Performances will be evaluated by a panel of leading industry professionals, who will also host and musically direct the event. The winner will be the finalist who delivers the most outstanding overall performance.
