Plans for the London Colosseum have been released. Developers hope that the venue will go on to host major sports and entertainment events, from international basketball tournaments to world championship boxing and beyond. The capacity of the arena is set to be 25,000, which means that it would take over the Co-Op Live Arena in Manchester as the biggest in the UK.

The Growing Need for Arenas and Stadiums in the UK

Artists and sports teams often book out stadiums and arenas across the country, with some choosing to film their performances so fans can watch them time and time again. In the media, arenas and stadiums have a big role to play.

The American TV show Ted Lasso is one example that centres on life in a Premier League football stadium. Movies like The Greatest Showman also used large arenas to showcase the acts, before moving to the iconic big top. In iGaming, casino games UK also feature large stadiums. Goal, Goal, Goal! Roulette is a prime example. The title features a football stadium as the backdrop, showing that stadiums have a place in the wider entertainment world.

Many arenas in the UK are used to house eSports tournaments, with spectators tuning in online as well as attending in person. One of the most recent examples is the Copper Box Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, which has been welcoming eSports matches since 2023.

The proposal for the arena will include a multifunctional tower, which will house a hotel, residences, and even community facilities. The idea is to extend the life of the site beyond events and embed it into the general culture of London.

Plans for a London Colosseum Academy

Development is going to include two smaller 3,000-seat venues, named the London Colosseum Academy. It will house a boxing gym, a training centre for eSports, and a basketball court. If the London Colosseum does go ahead, there are speculations that it could be used as the home court for a future London franchise in the already-planned NBA Europe league.

Jericho Estates, Torch Sports, and Peacock Gym are all working together on the new project. According to the plans drawn up by architects Cybik + Krostof, the bowl will be attached to the arena floor, so that it can be used for diverse sporting events.

The arena and the public space surrounding it should continue to evolve, so that the inefficiency of one-use stadiums will become a thing of the past.

Even though planning is in the early stages right now, it would eventually build on Stratford’s growing cluster of venues, with plans to build a £15 million music arena. The music venue would be developed by the same people who worked on Brixton’s Phonox and the Jazz Cafe in Camden. This means that visitors will have more options than ever when it comes to attending events, and it would position the arena as a diverse, multi-use complex that can draw crowds from across the world.
