A leaked document outlining a proposed deal between the EU and the UK ahead of a summit later this month constitutes “a re-subjugation” to European lawmakers, according to the former Conservative MP Sir Bill Cash.
He was commenting on a leaked draft statement, obtained by GB News, which outlines the demands of the EU ahead of the UK-EU summit on 20 November.
It calls for the UK to stop sending foreign national prisoners to the EU, an uncapped Youth Experience Scheme, EU students to pay the same tuition fees as Brits, and a new deal on fishing in the Celtic Sea.
In return, a deal would allow farmers to export meat and vegetables to the continent without red tape, and the UK and EU will try to find third countries to process illegal migrants.
Asked if his red lines on dealing with the EU are being crossed, Cash said: “Well, they are being crossed, and actually, what’s going to happen is that we’re going to be expected to align ourselves with European laws.
“We’re not going to be able to shape the decisions. It’ll all be decided effectively by the European Union. We will be supplicants.
“We’re going to have to pay for it all. And the bottom line is that what’s happening is that this is a transgression of democratic accountability. This government, 20 days after the general election, abolished the European Scrutiny Committee in its entirety immediately, and that is really bad.
“So it really crosses the boundaries of sovereignty, and this is in fact a racket. It’s not actually a reset. It’s a re-subjugation to European lawmakers.
“But why do they do that [draft an agreement] at this stage, when actually the meeting on the 20th of November has already been effectively signed and sealed? I know that you’ll say, ‘Oh well, it could be re-negotiated’, but it’s not going to be in practice.
“They’ve already had a lot of negotiations, and they’ve come to the conclusion it’s going to cost the United Kingdom an arm and a leg.”
