Siobhan Benita urges Mayor of London to install hand sanitisers on tube to contain coronavirus

Lib Dem mayoral candidate Siobhan Benita has written to the Mayor of London asking him to consider whether installing hand sanitiser pumps at tube and train stations and on buses would be a valuable tool in containing the spread of coronavirus.

She has also asked him if he is planning a public health campaign using all of the TfL channels, including poster sites and the TfL website and twitter account which reach millions of Londoners.

Here’s the text of Siobhan’s letter:

Dear Sadiq

I’m writing to urge you to consider whether installing hand sanitiser pumps at tube and train stations and on buses would be a valuable tool in containing the spread of coronavirus.

The NHS guidance is for regular handwashing but it says that hand sanitiser gel can be used when soap and water are not available. I am sure you will have seen reports of hand sanitiser being rationed or out of stock at some supermarkets and chemists so asking commuters to carry their own may no longer be practical. Even if only a small proportion of commuters make use of the sanitisers, it could have a big impact.

I would also like to know whether you are planning a public health campaign using all of the TfL channels, including:

-Poster sites across the Underground and other TfL sites
– The travel news information page in the – – Metro newspaper
– TfL’s website – I must say I was disappointed and surprised to see that there is currently no information at all about coronavirus on the website
– TfL’s twitter accounts and its extensive email contacts

Clearly, we need to ensure everything appropriate is being done to safeguard Londoners while keeping our transport system moving. I know Londoners will want to play their part in helping contain the virus and protect those most at risk. It would be good to see some proactive communications and action very soon.

Best regards

Siobhan Benita

Liberal Democrat Candidate for Mayor of London
